Automations: Creating a Marketo Engage Campaign

  • Updated

If you haven't already taken the steps to set up Sendoso in Marketo Engage, start here, and then come back to this article.

Now that you have set up Sendoso in Marketo Engage, you can create a campaign to be triggered! You can send via Marketo Engage in two different ways; via a Marketo Engage Webhook or through a Dynamic eGift link. This article will review both of these options!

Creating the Sendoso Automation

To start, you are going to create a new campaign. For more information on that process, click here.

Once you've created the campaign you'd like to automate with Marketo, head over to the Automations page within Sendoso. It's under the Configure link in the top navigation.

Click + Create Automation and locate the campaign you created for Marketo. Click Next at the top to configure the automation.

Select Marketo on the next page.

Set how long the gift offer will remain active for recipients. Here's where you'll also choose your Marketo channel and program for tracking purposes. Please note here you'll need to copy and paste the names of your program.

On the next page, you'll have the opportunity to type out the email gift offer template and the notecard template (for physical gifts with notecards.) You can use the fields available in Marketo to personalize the messages.

Here is where you'll also choose who receives notifications for this automated Send.

Creating the Marketo Smart Campaign

Now we'll go through the Marketo side of the automation. If you prefer to view a demo, click here.

First, Click Marketing Activities at the top of your Marketo account and find the campaign you'd like to put this automation under and right click. Select New Smart Campaign from the options that appear.

Give your Smart Campaign a name and description (optional) and click Create

Click on the Smart List tab at the top of your Smart Campaign creator.

Locate the trigger you'd like this campaign to run off of in the panel on the right. Use the search bar if you have trouble finding it. In this example, we'll be triggering this automation based on list membership. Drag and drop the trigger into the center panel.

Search for the list you'd like to use. Once you add the list, click over to the Flow tab at the top. This is where you'll determine what actions to take based on a contact being added to the list. Drag and drop the action into the center panel.

In the attribute bar, search for Sendoso Touch ID and click it. Now, you'll need to go back to your Sendoso account to copy the Automation UUID

Paste the UUID into the field in Marketo.

Now, in the search bar on the right, search for Call Webhook. Drag and drop the Call Webhook action under the Sendoso Touch ID action.

Search Automation Webhook and select that option.

Go back to your Sendoso automation page and click Save & Activate.

Now back over on Marketo, click the Schedule tab at the top and then click Activate to save the Smart Campaign.

If you'd like to test the automation in Marketo, go to the Database tab at the top, find your list and add a new contact to the list.

Then, head back over to the Smart Campaign you just created and to the Results tab. You should see the new webhook call with the person's name and email address.

This is also where you'd go to troubleshoot any errors in the webhook call.

Best Practices

  • Use a Funding Source, instead of the Sender's balance when configuring the campaign on the Sendoso side. This will prevent any pauses to the automated campaign.
  • If you'd like to add a human to the automation loop, requiring approval to sends before they're processed, click Require Approval in the Sendoso campaign configuration. Screenshot 2026-07-23 at 10.55.45 AM.png
  • Use variable tokens in your offer email and notecard message templates to personalize each send. This can be done in the configuration of the automation in Sendoso. Screenshot 2026-07-23 at 10.57.43 AM.png

FAQs

I am getting an error when the webhook is called and don’t know why.

Check out this troubleshooting guide to find solutions for the most common errors we see.

Once a gift is delivered, can I trigger an action directly in Marketo?

Yes! If you create a channel for Gifting or Direct Mail via these instructions then you can create a SmartCampaign that triggers an action once a gift status is delivered for example. Here is a screenshot of what that might look like in Marketo:

If we trigger a SmartCampaign to call the Sendoso webhook, where is the email sent from?

If you call the Sendoso webhook, that will trigger Sendoso to send the email on your behalf. We recommend setting up our Custom Domain feature so you can control the email address the emails are sent from.
If you want to send the email directly from Marketo, we would recommend using an Integrated Party Link

Why are all my sends triggered via Marketo are showing up under a random users name in the Send Tracker?

When you setup the webhook in Marketo, we ask you to add a specific users key to the payload template. The key of the user that you use is who will show up as the sender in the send tracker. If you want to change who the sender is, just update the user key in the payload template of your Sendoso webhook.

Do I need to re-enter my Client ID, Client Secret, and REST URL every time I create a campaign?

No. That information is entered once per Sendoso user account the first time you set up a Marketo campaign. After that, it's saved and you won't need to enter it again for future campaigns.

What is the Sendoso Touch ID and where does it go in Marketo?

The Sendoso Touch ID is a unique identifier generated for each Sendoso campaign. You'll see it at the end of the Automation setup process in Sendoso. Copy it and use it to populate the sendosoTouchID field on the lead record inside your Marketo Smart Campaign flow. Without this, Sendoso won't know which campaign to trigger.

Can I send Amazon gifts via a Marketo webhook?

No. Amazon sends are not supported through the Marketo webhook. All other campaign types are supported.

How do I track gift activity back in Marketo?

Sendoso pushes a few additional fields back to Marketo after a gift is sent: the total amount spent, the tracking number, and the tracking URL. You can use these in Marketo for reporting or to trigger follow-up flows based on shipping and delivery events.

Can I map Sendoso gift statuses to Marketo program member statuses?

Yes, if you've set up the Sendoso channel with the correct member statuses. The final step in Sendoso campaign creation is where you configure this mapping. Complete it to get full gift lifecycle visibility inside your Marketo program.

The webhook was called but no gift was sent. What should I check first?

Start by confirming three things: the campaign is set to Active in Sendoso, the Campaign ID in your Marketo flow exactly matches the campaign in Sendoso, and the sendosoTouchID field is correctly populated on the lead record. If all three look right, head to the Marketo Engage Errors and Troubleshooting article for a full breakdown of common error codes.
